PODIUM FINISH AT GRUNDY

Morris, IL (June 20,214)  Every year the ARCA Midwest Tour travels to Grundy County Speedway in Morris, IL it is always steamy hot, and this year was no different.  The temperature was pushing ninety degrees and the sun was shining when the 77 car took to the track for the first practice.

Practices went well for the Eilen team and they were ready to qualify. Jonathan qualified in the eleventh position which put him on the front row for the odd/even fast dash heat race where he would finish second.

As the sun began to set, the ARCA Midwest Tour drivers started their engines and were ready for the 100 lap feature.  Eilen would start in the third position for the feature and showed that the front of the pack was where he should be.  Eilen would put continuous pressure on the first -place driver for sixty laps before any other driver would be able to catch the two of them.  Third-place driver, Majeski, would catch the top two drivers with forty laps to go and put pressure on Eilen for second.

With thirty laps to go, and the top three nose-to-tail, Eilen felt his engine beginning to miss and lose horsepower.  Eilen put up a fight, but unfortunately lost the second position to Majeski.  With a large gap between Eilen and the fourth place driver, Eilen knew he could continue to pressure the top two drivers with what he “had left” for power.

And pressure he put on! In the final lap, Eilen had the second place driver (Majeski) on his outside and gave it all he had to the finish.  The side-by-side, nose-to-nose finish was gut-wrenching but not quite enough for Eilen to capitalize on second.  He would (happily) settle for third place.

“Man…we had the car to win it,” stated Eilen in a post-race interview. “I wasn’t going to make any passes for the lead right away in hopes Weinkauf (first place driver) would run his tires off and make it easier to pass as the laps clicked on.  Then when Majeski caught up to us was about the time I started losing horsepower.  To finish third without a well-working engine is just fine to me!”

Jonathan and the Eilen & Sons Motorsports team will have a short break before the next race on Saturday, June 28 at Dells Raceway Park. Qualifying will start at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 7:00 p.m.  See you at the track!
